Udaipur<\/strong> <\/a>is a lake city. The whole place is built around Lake Pichola<\/strong>, and the City Palace sits directly on its banks. Walk the old city and everything eventually leads back to water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s the most European-feeling city in Rajasthan, which is why it shows up so often in honeymoon packages. The architecture is lighter, the pace is slower, and the rooftop restaurant scene is genuinely excellent. The practical difference: logistics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where most travel guides go quiet. Udaipur<\/strong> is easy to reach. It has its own airport (Maharana Pratap Airport, about 22 km from the city), regular trains from Jaipur and Delhi, and fits cleanly onto a Rajasthan circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaisalmer is further. It sits 550 km west of Jaipur, deep inside the Thar Desert. The overnight train from Jaipur takes around 10-12 hours. The road distance from Udaipur to Jaisalmer is roughly 500-528 km, which is a full day’s drive. If you’re on a tight schedule, Jaisalmer costs you more travel time than Udaipur does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The honest truth: Jaisalmer rewards people who plan specifically around it. It’s not a city you tack onto a Golden Triangle trip without adding at least 2 extra days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s closer to Jaipur (about 5-6 hours by road), has an airport for easy departure, and gives you lakes, palaces, and city walking without a full-day journey in either direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have 10-12 days and want Rajasthan to feel genuinely different from the Golden Triangle, Jaisalmer earns its place. The desert landscape, the living fort<\/strong>, and the overnight dune camp are experiences that have no equivalent in Udaipur or anywhere else on the circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What each city does best<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Udaipur wins on: romantic atmosphere, lakeside dining, day trip options (Chittorgarh Fort is 2.5 hours away, Kumbhalgarh is 3 hours), and overall ease of navigation. The old city is compact and walkable, which matters more than people realise when you’re already tired from 2 weeks of travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaisalmer wins on: uniqueness, the fort experience, the desert itself, and the overnight camp. It’s also one of the few places in India that genuinely looks different after dark. The sandstone fort lit up at night with tourists gone is a different place entirely from what you see at noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both cities have excellent heritage hotels. Udaipur has Taj Lake Palace, famously built on an island in Lake Pichola. Jaisalmer has Suryagarh, a large fortified property about 5 km from the main fort with desert views from every room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case for both<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plenty of operators run a Jaipur-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer-Udaipur<\/strong> circuit that covers all of western Rajasthan in one loop. This makes sense geographically \u2014 you go west toward the desert, then curve back south toward the lakes. The route avoids doubling back and gives you both cities without the mileage penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have 12+ days, this circuit is worth doing. If you’re choosing just one, decide based on your travel style: slow and scenic goes to Udaipur; adventurous and remote goes to Jaisalmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to book wisely<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing most guides skip: transport between these cities is uncomfortable without a private car. The Jaisalmer-Udaipur bus takes 11-13 hours with limited comfort. Trains require a change at Jodhpur, adding hours.
