The five days each have a name and a ritual. Dhanteras (November 6) is for buying gold and silver. Choti Diwali (November 7) is for cleaning homes and lighting lamps. The main night (November 8) is Lakshmi Puja, with fireworks, diyas, sweets, and prayers. Govardhan Puja follows on November 9, and Bhai Dooj closes the festival on November 10.

Varanasi: the most extraordinary option
Varanasi during Diwali is already spectacular. But wait 15 days after the main festival and you get something even rarer.
Dev Deepavali falls on Tuesday, November 24, 2026, a full moon night when all 84 ghats of the Ganges are lit with over a million diyas simultaneously. Every ghat gets covered in lamps, the river reflects the light, and priests perform the Ganga Aarti at a scale that makes the regular evening ceremony look like a rehearsal.
This is probably the single most visually striking event in India’s festival calendar, and a fraction of Diwali’s crowds attend it. If your schedule allows, plan Varanasi for Dev Deepavali rather than the main Diwali night.
Jaipur: forts and fireworks
Jaipur is famous during Diwali for its market decorations, which become part of a competitive, city-wide light display. The old city’s bazaars, Johari Bazaar and Tripolia Bazaar especially, get covered in lights and marigolds. Amber Fort gets lit up from the hillside, visible from the city below.
Jaipur works particularly well for first-time visitors because it’s already on the Golden Triangle route. You don’t need to plan a separate leg to get there.
Amritsar: the Golden Temple at Diwali
Punjab adds its own significance to Diwali 2026 with the Golden Temple celebrations in Amritsar, which are spectacular. The temple is reflected in the Amrit Sarovar (sacred pool) surrounded by fireworks and thousands of devotees. Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas here, which means the atmosphere is devotional and genuinely moving rather than purely festive.
Amritsar adds at least 2 days to any North India itinerary, but Diwali is probably the best reason to make the detour.
Delhi: the capital at its most festive
Delhi during Diwali 2026 India celebration is chaotic in the best way. Markets overflow, every colony has its own lighting competition, and the air smells of mithai and marigolds. Connaught Place and Khan Market are worth visiting just to see the decorations.
The downside: Delhi’s air quality around Diwali can be poor due to fireworks, which compound the existing pollution. If you have respiratory sensitivities, Jaipur or Varanasi might be a better fit.
What to book in advance
Hotels in every major city sell out weeks ahead for Diwali weekend. Book train tickets by early August 2026 and flight tickets by September 2026 to get the best prices and availability.
The Varanasi ghats get crowded on both Diwali night and Dev Deepavali. Hire a boat for the evening rather than watching from the ghats — you’ll get a full panoramic view of every ghat lit simultaneously, which is impossible from ground level.
Practical notes
Some restaurants and shops close on the main Diwali night as owners celebrate with family. Stock up on snacks and plan to eat at your hotel if you’re in a smaller city.
Firecrackers get loud after dark. If you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs. The noise peaks around 10-11 PM and fades by midnight in most cities.
