Once a year, the gods are said to come down to bathe in the Ganges. And Varanasi responds by lighting a million lamps to welcome them.
Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday, November 24. This is Kartik Purnima, the full moon night of the Hindu month of Kartik, exactly 15 days after Diwali. The Pradoshakal muhurat, the auspicious window when the main ceremony happens, runs from 5:08 PM to 7:47 PM.

What actually happens — and why it’s different from Diwali
Dev Deepawali celebrates Lord Shiva’s victory over three powerful demons, Vidyunmali, Tarakaksha, and Viryavana, collectively known as Tripurasura, who had conquered all three worlds. Shiva destroyed their three flying cities with a single arrow, and the gods descended to the Ganges to bathe in celebration.
Every year in Varanasi, the city lights all 84 ghats simultaneously in their honor.
Regular Diwali is about Rama’s return to Ayodhya. Dev Deepawali is specifically Varanasi’s festival, and it’s far grander on the ghats. The regular evening Ganga Aarti runs with 7 priests. On Dev Deepawali, 21 priests and 24 young women perform an expanded ceremony that runs for over 2.5 hours instead of the usual 45 minutes.
The tradition of lighting lamps on the ghats was started at Dashashwamedh Ghat by Pandit Kishori Raman Dubey in 1991. It has grown every year since.
The Ganga Mahotsav connection
Most guides skip this entirely. Dev Deepawali is actually the final day of Ganga Mahotsav, a 5-day cultural festival running from Prabodhini Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima.
The full festival includes classical music performances, a country boat race on the Ganges, a daily arts and crafts fair (shilp mela), and sculpture displays along the ghats. If you arrive a day or two before November 24, you catch the build-up as well as the main event.
Where to watch
Dashashwamedh Ghat is the center of everything. The grandest aarti, the biggest crowd, the most intense energy. Get there by 4:30 PM for a good position.
Assi Ghat at the southern end is quieter, better for photography, and gives a clearer view without fighting through thousands of people. Good option if you want the atmosphere without the full crush.
Panchganga Ghat has deep spiritual significance as the supposed confluence of five sacred rivers. Less visited by tourists, more attended by local devotees.
The opposite bank, crossing by boat to the other side of the Ganges, gives you a full panoramic view of all the lit ghats simultaneously. No crowd. A telephoto lens and this view is the best festival photograph in India.
Boat vs ghat: the real decision
A boat on the river gives you the full picture. All 84 ghats lit simultaneously, the ceremony reflected on the water, no crowd to fight through. Shared boats run ₹200-₹300 per person. Private boats range from ₹1,800 to ₹13,000+ depending on size and positioning. Book a private boat at least 2-3 months in advance. Shared boats book out weeks ahead.
Watching from the ghat gives you the energy of the crowd, the sound of drums and conch shells up close, and the ability to participate directly in the Deep Daan ritual.
Deep Daan: how to participate
Deep Daan is the act of offering a small oil lamp to the river goddess. From around 6:30 PM, vendors along the ghat road sell small clay diyas with puja materials for ₹20-₹50. Buy one, carry it to the water’s edge, light it, and set it floating on the current.
This is the most direct way to participate in the ceremony rather than just watch it. Anyone can do it, regardless of religion.
Transport reality — plan this first
Varanasi comes to a near-standstill from 3:00 PM onwards on Dev Deepawali day. Auto-rickshaw rates increase 300-500% after 9 PM and waiting times extend to over an hour.
Park your vehicle at least 1.5 km from the ghats (near Rajghat or Dhobi Ghat) and walk in. If you’re staying at a hotel close to the ghats, you’re sorted. If not, leave before noon and don’t plan to return until midnight.
Pre-arrange return transport before you leave for the ghats. The assumption that you’ll find an auto at 10 PM will leave you stranded.
What to carry, what to leave behind
Bring: earplugs (fireworks and drums peak around 7-8 PM), a power bank (network congestion triples after 6 PM), a light jacket (November evenings in Varanasi drop to 14-16°C), and minimal valuables.
Leave behind: large bags, anything you’d mind losing in a crowd of 5 lakh people, and any plan that requires being somewhere specific after 8 PM.
Booking timeline
Hotels: book by July 2026. Prices increase 300-500% in festival week. Rooms near Dashashwamedh sell out first.
Private boats: book by August 2026.
Trains from Delhi or Mumbai to Varanasi: book by August for confirmed seats in November.
